As exam results day on Thursday 17 August approaches, thousands of students are feeling the pressure as they wait to find out if they have “made the grade.” Many students plan to start undergraduate degree programmes in the Autumn and will be apprehensive about getting the grades they need to take up their place at universities and colleges across the UK.
For those who don't get the results they need it can be a stressful time, but as Emma Brier, Registry Services Operations Manager at Trinity & All Saints in Leeds, explains, there is no need to panic.
Emma said, “We know it can be hard for students but the message really is don’t panic! Applicants who have narrowly missed their required grades may still be offered a place by their first choice of university. Alternatively, places on degree programmes are available through the clearing system.”
The clearing service provided by UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) matches candidates with course vacancies at universities and colleges throughout the UK. To be eligible for clearing, applicants should not be holding any offers, either from their first or second choice institution. It is also possible to apply for university for the first time through the clearing system.
Trinity & All Saints has vacancies through clearing on a wide range of degree courses in subjects including business and management, English, film studies, history, marketing, media, psychology, theology, sport, health and nutrition.
From results day, the College operates a clearing hotline (0113 283 7100) to give help and advice to students about the options of study available and also has clearing information on its website, www.leedstrinity.ac.uk/clearing, to support students through what can be a stressful time.
Emma said, "The phonelines can get really busy but we’re here until 8.00 pm on results day so keep trying. When you ring you should have ready your UCAS application number and your Clearing number. Once you get through you should demonstrate how keen you are on a particular subject area. Flexibility is also key, being open-minded about the options available will increase your chances of finding a suitable programme of study.”
