University News-Parkour A New Sports Trend is Catching On At University Campuses

"It's about conditioning. Parkour isn't about stunts. It's about bettering yourself. I would like to become as fit as possible.
I was a little fat kid and so I want to get really fit through parkour," Simpson said.
Like most, Simpson and Leitholf became interested in parkour from videos they had found online. Now, they often participate in "jams" together, some of which have been held at UC. Jams are when traceurs get together to parkour.
It's not a competitive sport, instead they aim to practice, help each other and have a good time.
Fluxbound only has 20 registered members, however, Simpson and Leitholf said there have been others who have shown up at their jams.
"It sounds really silly but ... I want to regain what man has lost. Our feet are weak compared to how they used to be, we're lazier, we're getting fatter," Simpson said . "I don't know, there's something attractive about being like an animal."
Leitholf enjoys parkour because it is a challenge and can be done anywhere.
Simpson has been practicing for a year, and Leitholf for almost two years.
Simpson said that traceurs have to drill techniques multiple times to get used to the movement and improve. Simpson tries to practice every day, however Leitholf said he has to go out of his way to train.
Fortunately for Leitholf, he lives near campus on Lakewood Street and can walk over to train whenever he feels the urge.
"When school started up we were having jams every Sunday night, but with it getting cold and rainy it's kind of died down," Leitholf said. "When I'm walking around it's always in my mind."
Parkour is not limited to jams. Leitholf said, for example, that when there are slow people walking ahead of you up stairs sometimes you could vault over a railing to get ahead.
"It's also the best self-defense anyone could ever have - running away," Simpson said.
Leitholf feels it's reassuring to know he would be able to get anywhere he wants to go regardless of whatever kind of obstacles are in the way.
"Or if through some unfortunate series of events someone is after you, you know you can get away," Leitholf said.
Simpson enjoys parkouring buildings with friends. To sit and relax on top, "It's nice, a sense of freedom looking down and seeing everyone," Simpson said.
"You're above all the hustle and bustle," Leitholf said.
